From the start the Friends worked
with the SF Rec. & Parks Volunteer
coordinator’s office to start
an every two month workday and beautification
effort. A native plant butterfly
garden was also planted adjacent
to the Conservatory. The Friends
have won grants from Friends of
Rec. & Park, SF Beautiful and
a supervisor’s set-aside. These
awards have helped beautify and
secure the back entrance, and provided
furniture, plants, art materials
and expertise for the numerous educational
and entertaining events which we
have held to date. Our well
attended events has brought wider recognition
of the Conservatory and has also
provided a focal point for neighborhood
participation in improving a neglected
jewel. The supervisor’s generous
set-aside enabled a historical study
to be carried out and serious irrigation
problems fixed.

A local architect provided pro bono
services to complete the preliminary
design concept with Rec. & Park
and during the public meeting process.
The Friends also works with all levels
of the Rec. & Park department
from gardeners and supervisors, to
grant writers, architects and the
managing director. We also advocate
and lobby with the City’s elected
and appointed officials to ensure
the Conservatory and its needs are
brought to their attention.
